Dec 26, 2024 · The U.S. Coast Guard has officially increased its fleet of icebreakers by 50%. The service announced this week that it had purchased the 360-foot icebreaker Aiviq.

For generations, the U.S. Coast Guard and its ancestor agencies, including the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, have played a mission-critical role in U.S. ice operations. That role has depended largely on the spread of U.S. strategic and commercial interests into icebound regions.

MISSION: Monitor the iceberg danger in the North Atlantic Ocean and provide relevant iceberg warning products to the maritime community. VISION: Eliminate the risk of iceberg collision. From the earliest journeys into the North Atlantic, icebergs have threatened vessels.

Domestic Icebreaking - The Coast Guard is the only federal agency directed to operate and maintain icebreaking resources for the United States. This includes establishing and maintaining tracks for critical waterways, assisting and escorting vessels beset or stranded in ice, and removing navigational hazards created by ice in navigable waterways.
