Cedar burns very hot when dry, guys that run steam engines use it to get their boilers up to temp in the mornings. Split it up small for kindling and keep it really dry, it's great stuff for starting fires and making your stove pipe glow.

Mar 30, 2012 · Red cedar can certainly last well over 100 years if left to it's own devices. Lots of folks dont realise this and when it loses its lustre (especially as a weatherboard) they will paint or oil it. That starts off a vicious cycle of having to keep doing the same thing.

Borers often vector in particularly nasty canker and root rot pathogens, and the substance exuded may be caused by such. Often borers, looking like yours but different species, will affect standing or cut deadwood.

A coat of drying oil, like Boiled Linseed Oil applied first and allowed to fully cure (a week minimum) and then topcoated with a varnish will help preserve the deep red/purplish hues of the Cedar. Eventually, though, it will turn brown.
