Shari Franke is opening up about the “strange” relationship between her mother Ruby Franke and the family’s therapist Jodi Hildebrandt in her new memoir, The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom.

“ [They] condemned queerness very publicly … while embodying it privately,” Shari writes of her mother and her business partner and alleged lover, Jodi Hildebrandt — in “ The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom ” (Gallery Books; Jan. 7).

Both Ruby Franke and Hildebrandt pleaded guilty to four counts of child abuse in 2023 against two of Ruby Franke's children, but not Shari Franke. Both Ruby Franke and Hildebrandt were sentenced to four consecutive sentences of one to 15 years in prison.

Ruby pleaded guilty to four counts of child abuse in December 2023, describing the “physical torture.” Ruby agreed to serve a prison term and that her sentences would run consecutively, as part of the plea deal. Ruby also testified against Hildebrant, who pleaded guilty.
