The hospitality industry and 3D printing technology are converging in a West Texas desert, building what is being called the world’s first 3D-printed hotel. An industrial-size printer is extruding layer after layer of a concrete mixture to form the walls of the hotel’s first two model units.

Forget cookie-cutter hotels and predictable layouts. El Cosmico, the beloved campground and hotel on the outskirts of Marfa, Texas, is embarking on an expansion that’s as unique as the West Texas landscape itself.

Icon is working with a Marfa, Texas hotel and campground to 3D print a hotel complete with standalone guest rooms, a pool, and a bathhouse.

It is the world’s first 3D-printed hotel, says El Cosmico owner Liz Lambert and the partners behind the project – Austin, Texas-based 3D printing company ICON and architects Bjarke Ingels Group. Lambert said the technology allows for unprecedented creativity.
