The dog days are over for the Washington Capitals, who got back to their game on Tuesday after a few weeks of trading off wins and losses. Brandon Duhaime had a goal and assist and Logan Thompson stood tall for the shutout to help the Capitals to a huge 3-0 win on Caps Canine Night.

But the Capitals were expecting the game to be “a little bit nasty,” as Coach Spencer Carbery put it after his team won, 2-1, in overtime behind two goals from center Pierre-Luc Dubois, who was at the center of the high-emotion proceedings throughout.

The Ottawa Senators return home with a tall order as they take on the best team in the East and League — the Washington Capitals. Washington leads the league with a 0.716 save percentage at 63 points in 44 games.

The Capitals will look to keep trending in the right direction against Ottawa, as Jakob Chychrun makes his return for the first time since being traded.

The Capitals are shaking things up on the top-6, with Pierre-Luc Dubois replacing Dylan Strome as Alex Ovechkin's center. Connor McMichael and Tom Wilson will play between Strome, while Aliaksei Protas moves to that top line.

In goal, Logan Thompson and Hunter Shepard worked in both nets, with Charlie Lindgren not skating as he recovers from an upper-body injury he suffered in Friday's loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Lindgren remains on the IR, but Carbery said he’s progressing well and they will see if he can be activated Saturday.

John Gibson made 22 saves for the Ducks, who have lost four of five (1-3-1). Anaheim was shut out for the second time in the past three games after not getting blanked in the first 41 games. Duhaime was credited with the goal that gave Washington a 1-0 lead at 7:34 of the first period.

The Capitals are expected to make some changes to the lineup with the team not able to generate much in terms of 5-on-5 offense. Logan Thompson played just 24 hours ago in D.C. with Charlie Lindgren being pulled due to an injury following a collision in the crease, but he will start. Hunter Shepard is up from Hershey to play second chair.
