Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) plan to demolish an alleged illegal mosque section in Dharavi has been halted following protests. Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad confirmed the cancellation after discussions with the Chief Minister.

Tensions escalated in Mumbai's Dharavi slum on Saturday when locals protested against the BMC's plan to demolish part of a mosque.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's drive to demolish an alleged illegal portion of a mosque in densely-populated Dharavi in Mumbai has been cancelled for today. The BMC has given eight days to the mosque committee.

Tension arose in Dharavi as residents opposed the BMC's plan to demolish an alleged illegal portion of a mosque. Police were deployed to maintain order. A delegation from the mosque, BMC officials, and police are in talks to resolve the issue.

An official said that a large number of police personnel were deployed at the site to prevent any untoward incident in view of the huge gathering.

After protests in Dharavi, the trustees of the mosque held talks with the BMC officials and sought four to five days to remove the encroached portion.
