NEW YORK — A medical examiner testified Friday in the trial of Daniel Penny. Penny, a Marine veteran, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the 2023 chokehold death of 30-year-old Jordan Neely. Prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses.

A New York City medical examiner testified on Friday that the pressure from Daniel Penny’s chokehold caused Jordan Neely’s tongue and other soft tissue in his neck up and toward the back of his throat, blocking off his windpipe and causing him to suffocate.

Jordan Neeley’s death was a direct result of the chokehold Daniel Penny held him in, a medical examiner testified Friday, rebutting assertions from the defense team that the former Marine did not apply enough pressure to kill the subway rider and that his death could have had some other cause.
