A janitor at a Syracuse charter high school was found dead Tuesday morning in the building’s cafeteria from what will likely be determined as carbon monoxide poisoning. The Syracuse Academy of Science has confirmed that a body was found in their high school.

The discovery of the carbon monoxide was made when emergency crews responded to a report of a body being found in the school's cafeteria.

Five adults were transported and another seven were treated at the scene for carbon monoxide symptoms, Syracuse fire officials said.

The Syracuse Academy of Science did not have carbon monoxide alarms in the cafeteria where a school employee was found dead and five others were hospitalized due to possible poisoning, an inspection by the Syracuse Fire and Codes Departments found.

Fire officials said a carbon monoxide detector attached to a medical equipment bag alerted crews of the poisonous gas in the air at the charter school.
