Hong Kong's Democratic Party said Thursday it is formally dissolving what once was the main political opposition group in the city. A task force has been set up to handle the legal and financial details of dissolution.

The Civic Party, Hong Kong's second largest pro-democracy political party, was dissolved in 2023. A few of its members have also been jailed under the national security law including Alvin Yeung and Jeremy Tam. HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s largest pro-democracy party took an initial step toward dissolving Thursday, in the latest sign of the Chinese territory's narrowing space for civil society groups following Beijng's crackdown on dissent.

The Hong Kong Democratic Party, a leading opposition force dating back to the British colonial era, is set to disband, following a years-long political crackdown in the Chinese territory that has seen prominent activists jailed and pro-democracy figures barred from standing for election.

Well-known figures from the party include Martin Lee (李柱銘) — hailed by some as Hong Kong’s “Father of Democracy” — as well as Albert Ho (何俊仁), who organized annual vigils to mark the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
