WEBBesides the fact that by the time you buy a fresh spool the filament has already been processed at least twice (into pellets and then into filament), tests have shown that recycled PLA prints turned into new filament retain ~90% of their original strength and material properties. The loss is there but also fairly negligible.

WEBJan 27, 2021 · In Canada & the US you can buy their 3D Printing Materials box to recycle ABS, but to recycle PLA you need their biodegradable plastics box which is US only. Well positive update actually, I reached out to Terracycle and they've said their Biodegradable Plastic Box will be available in Canada next week.

WEBThe cool thing about scraps is that you can even “weld” bits together by melting filament from the spool onto the separate pieces. I've been thinking of getting a cheap toaster oven and some teflon sheets and trying to melt the scraps into solid sheets of PLA, which I can then find use for (coasters, boxes, art etc).

WEBSep 26, 2021 · Then just recycle it appropriately. By the time you get through transportation and handling costs remanufacturing the filament will actually cost you more than new filament would. A quick Google shows bulk PLA pellets cost around 5-6$ a kilogram. All the rest of the money you pay for printer filament is in processing that to the final form.
